Cleanings and Prevention
Good dental hygiene is a major part of your overall medical health. Many people believe that simply providing good at-home care by brushing, flossing, and using mouthwash regularly will provide them with adequate dental care. This, however, is false. In order to fully care for your teeth and to prevent decay and gum diseases, regular cleanings and exams by a dentist are a must.
Taking care of your teeth involves a lot more than just brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. Several times a year you should visit a dentist for a full exam (which screens for tumors, gum disease, and cancer in addition to just cavities), receive x-rays regularly to check for tumors or abnormal bone development, and have all cavities filled before they get too deep. In addition, most people will experience periodontal (gum) disease at some point in their lives. If caught early, periodontal disease can be treated and harmless, but if left to foster can cause severe, permanent damage, and can interfere with pregnancy, diabetes, and heart conditions.
Once you have a cavity or gum disease, they will not go away on their own, and they can often be painful and expensive to treat. The best way to keep your mouth safe is to visit the dentist regularly while your teeth are healthy, to keep them that way and prevent any future problems. With regular dentist visits, you can remove the tartar and plaque that can cause cavities and gingivitis, thus reducing the future need for fillings, crowns, bridges, root canals, gum disease, or other more invasive dental procedures.
