For people who have lost all or most of their teeth, dentures are often the best option for replacing teeth. Crowns and bridges are only possible if enough teeth are left to give the bridges and crowns something to attach to; if there is nothing to attach to, a fully removable denture system may be the best option. For those with no teeth, complete dentures can be constructed to replace the entire smile. For those with some teeth remaining, a partial denture can be used instead.

Our teeth are meant to last a lifetime; from the time our baby teeth fall out and are replaced, to our final days, we need our teeth. Without them, we would not be able to eat and to sustain ourselves with food. However, as we all know, accidents do happen. Teeth can fall out for a number of reasons.

Accidents can knock a health tooth right out of place, leaving a gap behind. Congenital deformities can cause some people to never develop certain teeth, such as the incisors, or one set of molars. Cavities that are left untreated or other forms of poor dental hygiene can rot our teeth away until fillings cannot be used, and the tooth must be pulled. In any of these cases, a person might be left with a gap in their smile, which can be uncomfortable and embarrassing, especially if the tooth is in the front.

Luckily, dentures can be a great way to reform a smile that has been damaged due to several missing teeth. During your consultation appoint, Dr. Zadeh will examine your gums, bones, and remaining teeth in order to determine if any procedures need to be done before dentures can be used. Occasionally some bone must be filed down in order for the denture to fit properly, or sometimes one or two remaining teeth will need to be pulled, in order to prevent using a partial denture, having those remaining teeth fall out, and then needing to go through the entire process once again in order to obtain a complete denture. If Dr. Zadeh determines that dentures are the right choice for the patient, a mold of the gums and mouth will be taken, to ensure a proper fit when the dentures are created.

When your dentures are created, they will be made to be functional, aesthetically pleasing, and comfortable. This new set of teeth will allow you to chew and speak properly, will be colored to match your old teeth, and will be continuously adjusted to fit comfortably while your mouth is adjusting to the dentures—which can take between six to twelve months.

Dr. Zadeh will also provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for and clean your dentures, which includes removing the dentures at night, so that your own saliva can reach your entire mouth, which helps to maintain dental health.
